Furman Announces MVP's At Annual Men's Athletic Banquet

May 24, 2004

GREENVILLE - Senior golfer Matt Davidson was recognized as Furman University's Male Athlete-of-the-Year at the school's men's athletic banquet Monday night on campus.

A two-time All-Southern Conference performer and conference player-of-the-year selection, Davidson paced Furman in nine of 13 tournaments and claimed medalist honors in the Furman Intercollegiate and SoCon Championship, helping the Paladins to team titles in both events and berth to the NCAA Regionals. The West Windsor, N.J., native shot par or better in 19 of 38 rounds this year, averaged 72.2 strokes per round, and completed his career with a 73.4 stroke average, second only to former Paladin All-America and current PGA Tour member Brad Faxon.

Senior tennis player Art Baker, a math major from Nashville, Tenn., with a 3.97 grade point average, received Furman's Academic Achievement Award, and senior All-America football placekicker Danny Marshall from Atlanta, Ga., was honored with Furman's Student-Athlete Achievement Award. Marshall set a new conference career kick scoring record in 2003 with 312 points.

In addition, men's sports most valuable player awards were presented to Maleye Ndoye (basketball), John Chesworth and Patrick Fillnow (tennis), Scott Hoch (soccer), Kevin Crosby (cross country), Tyler Johnson and Brian Stone (track & field), and Matt Davidson (golf).
