Sapphire, N.C. -- Senior Ben Goforth grabbed a share of 10th while Furman is in a tie for 12th after the opening round of the Western Carolina Intercollegiate Monday at the par-71 Country Club of Sapphire Valley.
Goforth opened the 36-hole tournament with an even-par 71 and sits just five strokes back of tournament leaders Andres Cuenca and Dustin Furnari of Western Carolina entering Tuesday's play. Matt Hayes and Jack Ulrich each shot five-over 76 to earn a share of 48th. Furman struggled to a first round 300 to tie with Belmont and Appalachian State for 12th.
Western Carolina fired a four-over 278 to hold a five-stroke lead over Vanderbilt and 10-stroke cushion over Radford after 18 holes.
Final round action will take place Tuesday morning with play set to begin at 9:30 a.m.
